PHOTOVOLTAIC TECHNOLOGY
Photovoltaic technology is one the most promising renewable energy way to convert solar power into electricity and it is listed nowadays in the mainstream RES processes. The total PV solar power installed surpass the 500,000 mW barrier globally by the end of 2018 and it is still rising with an amazingly fast pace.

BIOMASS
Biomass is a term describing a renewable energy source, which is derived from organic matter. Biomass for energy purposes includes any type that can be used to produce solid, liquid, or gaseous fuels.
TABLE OF BIOMASS RAW MATERIALS

BIOMASS UTILIZATION – RAW MATERIALS – PRODUCTION PROCEDURES
Schematically in an introductory level below, are the three main uses of biomass utilization, the raw materials used and the best-known procedures to achieve a productive outcome from these sources.

BRIEF OUTLINE OF A BIO-LIQUID COMBUSTION PLANT
Biomass plants for electricity production (interconnected to national electricity grids) are financially effective and environmentally beneficial projects.
The stages of electricity production are carried out by using a combination of modified internal combustion diesel engines plus generators. It is possible to install additional electromechanical equipment to exploit the thermal balance (heat rejection) for additional power generation (via ORC, steam turbines technology etc.).
In the following photos you can easily see an indicative building scheme and the basic electromechanical equipment needed:

Similar innovative projects exist in several countries around the globe, using advanced systems of the most reliable manufacturers of this sector (Deutz, Perkins, Volvo, Wartsila, Stamford, Mecc Alte etc.).
WOOD AND AGRO PELLETS & BRIQUETTES
Wood and agricultural pellets & briquettes are both biofuels made from compressed organic matter.
The pellets can be made from biomass (generally made from compacted sawdust). Furthermore, the pellets are categorized by their heating value, moisture and ash content and dimensions. They can be used as fuels for power generation, but mostly for commercial or residential heating. Pellets are extremely dense and can be produced with a low moisture content (below 10%) that allows them to be burned with a remarkably high combustion efficiency.
On the other hand, wood & agro briquettes are made of dry, untreated wood chips (e.g. wood shavings) or agricultural residues and crops. They are pressed with high pressure without any binder. By compacting the matter with this high pressure, it turns into a fuel like coal.
ADVANTAGES
Both products have a lower ash and sulfur content, compared to fossil fuels. The carbon dioxide (CO2) balance is even because pellets & briquettes made of wood or agro matters release just as much CO2 to the atmosphere as the trees or plants used for their production once absorbed through growth by photosynthesis. In addition, they have a substantially higher energy content per cubic meter due to their density which means less storage space and more heat released per kg.
ENERGY CONTENT
The low moisture content of about 10% leads to an energy content of around 5.0 kWh per kg depending on the type of matter. Green firelogs for example have a water content of around 50% with 2.5 kWh/kg as energy content.
PELLET

BRIQUETTE

This sector is expanding rapidly at the last two decades and there are economic, social, and environmental purposes of entering to this kind of business.
These kind of production plants (micro to medium & of course large scale) are almost all profitable, useful for the local economies and produce an excellent, low cost biofuel to cover heating purposes. Finally, in the next two infographics you could easily find more details about the production procedure, for pellet and briquette plants, respectively.
